Stories about Sea-Buckthorn

From the 19th century.
Told by a visitor at a museum.

Two families had their eyes on a few plants. When it was time to harvest the berries, which were going to keep them healthy during the winter, it became a feud. With headlines in the media of that time. People knew the value of the berries.

Göteborg. Large family during the beginning of the 20th century.
Told by a daughter of the family.
We picked the berries and mother used them in brea, and also made butter of Sea-Buckthorn. Since the berries are so rich in fat, they can easily be mixed with other fats. And we were never sick!

A similar story from Norway.
Told by an elderly woman.
This is nothing special. We had them when we grew up. They grew on the mountain, and we always picked them. Mother used them in bread, or made juice and jam. She also gave them to the animals, to keep them healthy. They were valuable, you see. We were always healthy..

Norway.
Told by a 92 year old woman and her daughter.
- We picked them and made liqueur! The lady said. - Where did you pick them, the daughter asked?
With a wink the lady answered.
-We can go and see if they still are there, it's not far from here. It's a bit of a secret.

Finland.
Told by a 95 year old woman.
She proudly said that her fiance is 75 years old, and that she can keep herself in shape thanks to the wild Sea-Buckthorn berries growing in front of her house. But her neighbor didn't like them, so he cut them down. He thought they were growing too high. Now they have grown back, and she can keep on enjoying life.

Told by a friend of Paula.
"I don't think there's anything special with that Sea-Buckthorn juice or jam."
But this story she couldn't keep herself from telling.
She and a group of friends where on their way to Denmark one winter, and a storm came. They were waiting in Helsingborg to be able to get on board the ferry. The bridge between Sweden and Denmark was closed. They became both tired and thirsty. She then remembered she had that Sea-Buckthorn juice with her. They hadn't taken more than a sip, and the wind calmed down, as if by a stroke of magic, eery. They looked at each other and the juice.
-We better not tell about this. But they couldn't resist.
